Literature Text

(m/n) sat at his piano, attempting to play a song in Madlene’s memory. But whenever he tried to play, a certain face flashed though his mind, and he was unable to play any more. He groaned in annoyance as he stood up and walked out of the house, and out of the illusion. The cold snow of the alps was gleaming in the Spring light, and he took in a deep breath of fresh air, before exhaling it in a puff of steam.

“It’s all that stupid Jack’s fault,” he muttered. It was, partially, Jack’s fault he couldn’t play his usual music. Although in the back of his mind he felt slightly guilty that he wasn’t helping them in their time of need, it only harshened his anger. They had told him they would help him in his time of need, but ended up knocking him out so he couldn’t save her. And why? Because they were ‘scared’ of her. They thought she was too ‘dangerous’ to continue living. That part infuriated (m/n) the most. They had no right choosing which witch would get to die or live. That was the job the Man in the Moon assigned (m/n)! Not those pompous guardians who considered themselves even above nature!

A gentle breeze that sent his hair flying calmed him down a bit. But even if he had threatened Jack, he knew that he couldn’t in the end. He had an uncanny resemblance to Madlene, and his speech was also very similar to hers. He sighed, falling to his knees and sent his head into the snow to calm himself down. A bubbly laugh above him made him look up, and a smile graced his face for the first time in a while.

“Hey buddy, what you doing there?” The brown haired person asked the Witchcraft spirit. (m/n) huffed, getting up before brushing his pants and shaking his head to get rid of the snow.

“I might ask you the same thing. What is the great spirit of nature doing in a place like this, where there is no vegetation or animals to be seen?” The other teen laughed sheepishly before sitting down in the snow,

“I’m skipping work again. Mother’s been working me to the bone, and this is the only place she never looks. Anyways, don’t call me “the great spirit of nature”, I’m pretty sure you don’t like it when I call you the “Great Witch” now do you (m/n).” (m/n) sighed in defeat, before laughing a bit and seating himself next to his friend, ruffling his brown hair.

“It’s good to see you Niko.” Niko hummed as (m/n) called him by his name, and then gave his friend a cheeky look. “What are you plannin-,” but before the spirit could ask what he was up to, Niko, shoved him to the side and buried him under some snow. (m/n) gasped at how cold it was and glared at the green eyed teen, who was laughing his head off.

“You should have seen your face!” He laughed as he clutched at his stomach. (m/n) growled, and just as he was about to attack Niko with a beam of ‘crying’ magic, he remembered what had happened earlier that day, and got up without a word. Niko rose a brow at (m/n)’s unusual behaviour and got up as well, following him back to the mansion.

“Hey, you ok?” He asked, while (m/n) just shrugged. Narrowing his eyes, Niko grew a barrier of roots in front of (m/n) so he would stop walking. “Tell me what’s wrong. You never act like this, even on the anniversary of Madlenes death.” He said as (m/n) turned to face him. (m/n) stayed silent for a few seconds, allowing the both of them to hear some birds chirping from the illusion surrounding them.

“Jack Frost came to visit me today.” He started, causing Niko to wince. Niko’s mother hates Jack, not only because he kills all of her work every year, but also the fact that he once destroyed one of her precious Grove trees. Even if it was an accident, Mother Nature promised the next time he did so, she would end him, right there and then.

“And what did he visit you for?” Niko asked.

“He wanted me to join the guardians.”

And so, (m/n) and Niko moved to the living room in (m/n)’s home. After serving his friend tea, he explained what had happened while Jack was there, Niko listening attentively. When he was done he scowled and leaned back into his sofa chair.

“There’s no way in hell that I’m going to join them after what they did to me.” Crossing his arms, he glared at Niko, daring him to try and change his mind. Niko sighed and sipped at the tea for a bit, thinking of what to say to the yellow eyed teen.

“I think you should help them, but in return, they must do something… I dunno, like repent? Maybe tell them that they have to skip a month of doing their work, make them feel the suffering you felt. But this new person, he could be bad, not only for them, but for you and  me as well.” Niko said slowly, letting (m/n) process what he had just said. (m/n) didn’t reply only got up and left through the door to the graveyard, beaconing his friend to follow. They ended up looking over the graves as (m/n) whispered to his friend.

“All of the witches that are buried here. Do you know who they were?” He asked. Niko’s eyes widened. Never had his friend ever told him who they were.

“No.”

“They were all people that I had saved and taken care of. The most of them were only teens, and the few that were over eight-teen were still in their early twenties. We were all like a big family, living inside this very house. But then we were found, and do you know who told the church were to find us?” Niko shook his head. (m/n) smiled, but Niko could tell his teeth were clenched as he spoke one name. Niko took a step back

“No, that can’t be, he wouldn’t do that!”

“Oh but he would, and he did. That person that everyone finds as a goodie two shoes is the one who sold my witches and I out.” The children were taken, and experimented on. They were tortured so much some of them even begged for death. So I went to find the guardians. I told them there were only three left, but there were more than fifty. If they had helped me like they said they would, Madlene would have been able to help me save all of them, but instead they let her burn, and at the time, I wasn’t skilled enough to go and save them. And they all died.” Niko didn’t have anything to say as (m/n) turned to him with glossy eyes.

“So please don’t tell me to help those murders, because I could have saved all the witches had they helped and lifted one finger!” He screamed. Niko didn’t say anything as (m/n) turned his back to the green eyed teen and left for his house. Niko bit his nails nervously as he turned back to the graves. He saw Madlenes grave, with purple flowers that grew from all around it. He forced a smile as he saw that the flowers that were grown were purple Hyacinth.

“Hyacinths being purple means ‘sorrow’ in flower language… I guess you perfected your plant magic.” Niko muttered as he heard the piano start playing. He turned around to face the mansion, debating whether or not he should go inside and comfort his friend. He decided against it, this had been an eventful day for (m/n) and Niko thought he needed some space. He walked out of the illusion, flowers and grass adorning the snowy ground on which he had previously stepped on. As he walked back down the mountain he thought back to the story that (m/n) had just told him.

He almost couldn't believe (m/n) when he said that person was the one who sold his family out to the Church, but then again, he had only met him once.

“Why would he do that… Why would you, Sandman?”
So quite a few of you have been trying to guess who Madlene was, and I can only tell you that she will be mentioned a few times later on. I hope you enjoyed this chapter!

I'll try to make the next one longer, but no promises.
